Oblivion by Kelly Creagh (Nevermore #3)

**I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. It will be released on July 28, 2015.**

Publisher: Antheneum Books for Young Readers
Pages: 448

This electrifying conclusion to the Nevermore trilogy takes one last trip to the dream world of Edgar Allan Poe to reveal the intertwined fates of Isobel and Varen.

The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins? —Edgar Allan Poe

The fine line between life and death blurred long ago for Isobel Lanley. After a deadly confrontation with Varen in the dreamworld, she’s terrified to return to that desolate and dangerous place. But when her nightmares resume, bleeding into reality, she is left with no choice. Varen’s darkness is catching up to her. To everything. Threatening to devour it all.

Isobel fears for her world. For her sanity and Varen’s—especially after a fresh and devastating loss. To make matters worse, the ghostly demon Lilith wants Varen for her own, and she will do anything to keep him in her grasp—anything.

Can Isobel ever find her happy ending? Worlds collide and fates are sealed in this breathtaking finale to the Nevermore trilogy.
My Thoughts:
I have been waiting for this book for YEARS!!! I read the first book Nevermore when it first came out!!!!!! Nevermore is STILL on my most favorites list. The second book Enshadowed was a bit of a disappointment as I felt that the whole book was about rehashing what happened in the first book. It was only the ENDING that made it worth reading and it killed me when I read that ending. AAAH that ending....

Book three the FINAL book in this trilogy is finally here. Throughout the whole last book, Kelly Creagh stayed true to her imagination that is dark and haunting. Yet, beautiful in her writing style and creativity.
I am absolutely in love with the dynamics between Varen and Isobel. You have polar opposites who were able to see and reach beyond the surface and find each other.

I love the tragic side of Varen and how he coped with life throw dark tales of Edgar Allen Poe which brought about the adventure of all three books.

I love the character development of Isobel throughout the series where nothing became more important to her than getting Varen back.

The dark and twisted tale that brought about the separation of these two was utterly brilliant and in book three we continue to see how far one can fall and how hard it is to come back from a deep dark place. There is more to the story than meets the eye. I enjoyed the aspect of Edgar Allen Poe's stories brought to life and how dark and twisted they can be. I enjoyed the modern take that is weaved throughout the story.

I enjoyed learning more about certain characters and the 2 sides which mirrors another character in the book. It was fascinating. I loved it and even felt sorry for it. Brilliant.

However I must admit that even in this last book it got a little redundant in the fact that I felt I was just going in circles and I just wanted it to end! I wanted a happily ever after and instead I got 448 pages of ring-around-the -dark-twisted-rosy.

I was very pleased and satisfied with the ending. I can't wait to own this third book and reread them. But the first book, Nevermore, will still be-in my opinion-the best of all. I look forward to more from this author.

Hidden Huntress by Danielle L. Jensen (The Malediction Trilogy #2)

Book: #2 The Malediction Trilogy
Publication Date: June 2, 2015
Publisher: Angry Robot
Pages: 464

Sometimes, one must accomplish the impossible.

Beneath the mountain, the king’s reign of tyranny is absolute; the one troll with the capacity to challenge him is imprisoned for treason. Cécile has escaped the darkness of Trollus, but she learns all too quickly that she is not beyond the reach of the king’s power. Or his manipulation.

Recovered from her injuries, she now lives with her mother in Trianon and graces the opera stage every night. But by day she searches for the witch who has eluded the trolls for five hundred years. Whether she succeeds or fails, the costs to those she cares about will be high.

To find Anushka, she must delve into magic that is both dark and deadly. But the witch is a clever creature. And Cécile might not just be the hunter. She might also be the hunted…

My Thoughts:
I fell in love with Danielle L. Jensen since I read her first book Stolen Songbird when it first came out!  I've had to wait, and wait for book two now I have to wait for book three! ARRRGH!

I love that this book/series isn't a little book, it has actual story and lines, and descriptions, and not some quick fast-paced book that is over in 200 pages! There is just so much to love about this book as much as the second.

I know some people were annoyed that a long part of the book the two main love interests remained separated, but I was totally okay with that. I mean it left you wanting to read more and more to know what will happen and how they are ever going to be reunited. *sigh* it's a beautiful thing. Generally once characters get together I loose interest in the over story. Sad but true...

Alright so in Hidden Huntress it follows Cecile who is a rising star on the opera stage, her mother is the driving force behind her success. However, Cecile can't keep out of her head or heart her husband whom she had to leave behind.

Under the mountain in the troll kingdom, Tristan is barely keeping it together. After is big betrayal to his father, Tristan has been in prison for some time. When he is released he is only just barely. The game continuing between Tristan, his father and others was really enjoyable to read about.

The alternating points of view in this book, was not annoying at all to me like it usually does. I really enjoyed what was going on with Cecile outside the troll kingdom and what was going on inside with Tristan. I felt the author did a FANTASTIC job of keeping points of view separate and very distinct.

The ending was amazing. I enjoyed the twist and turns and the action at the end. I wasn't too surprised with the "revelation" but it was still fun to read. The mystery, adventure of it all was just right for book two in this series. I can't wait for book three and look forward to more books by this author.

Sexual Content: moderate (kissing, knowledge that 2 characters had sex)
Language: mild
Violence: moderate (murder, battle, some torture-nothing too graphicO)
Drugs/Alcohol: mild (social drinking, a character gets drunk)

*overall I would recommend this series to anyone!

End of Days by Susan Ee (Penryn & the End of Days #3)

Published: May 12, 2015
Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Pages: 435

After a daring escape from the angels, Penryn and Raffe are on the run. They’re both desperate to find a doctor who can reverse the twisted changes inflicted by the angels on Raffe and Penryn’s sister. As they set off in search of answers, a startling revelation about Raffe’s past unleashes dark forces that threaten them all.

When the angels release an apocalyptic nightmare onto humans, both sides are set on a path toward war. As unlikely alliances form and strategies shift, who will emerge victorious? Forced to pick sides in the fight for control of the earthly realm, Raffe and Penryn must choose: Their own kind, or each other?
My Thoughts:
Holy cow what happened Susan Ee.... What I LOVED about the first two books, failed for me in this last one that I have waited 2 YEARS for! GAH!

The ending was typical and cliché I knew that is what would happen. Which wasn't completely disappointing but I'm satisfied enough with that ending.

The story itself was fabulous and totally Susan Ee and maintained the awesomeness from the first two books.

Penryn continued to kick butt and all the awesome, freakishly weird, creepy, cool characters from the other books are brought back, and it all ended with a bang.

What disappointed me? THE ROMANCE! What I loved about the first two books was that it didn't overwhelm the story! Penryn wasn't some hormonal, horney girl who didn't lose focus of what was really going on in hopes of rolling in the hay with Raffe! what the heck! what happened?! I seriously felt like it became a romance book instead of a cool post apolozclyptal story.

Granted, the action was great, and I kinda hoping that Susan Ee will do something with this world now that it has been utterly destroyed. I'd like to see if she could carry on with a story of rebuilding or something maybe not with Raffe and Penryn but you know.

Anyway overall the actual story line was great the action-spot on. The romance...sadly didn't fit with the other two books. Oh well, I am not giving up on you Susan Ee!

Sexual Content: heavy (kissing, petting, panting, tension)
Language: mild/moderate (I can't remember)
Violence: heavy (murders, killing, battle scenes)
Drugs/Alcohol: mild/none

*Due to content in THIS book I would stamp this Obtain for those sensitive to that type of content*

Half a King by Joe Abercrombie

Prince Yarvi has vowed to regain a throne he never wanted. But first he must survive cruelty, chains, and the bitter waters of the Shattered Sea. And he must do it all with only one good hand.

The deceived will become the deceiver.

Born a weakling in the eyes of his father, Yarvi is alone in a world where a strong arm and a cold heart rule. He cannot grip a shield or swing an axe, so he must sharpen his mind to a deadly edge.

The betrayed will become the betrayer.

Gathering a strange fellowship of the outcast and the lost, he finds they can do more to help him become the man he needs to be than any court of nobles could.

Will the usurped become the usurper?

But even with loyal friends at his side, Yarvi finds that his path may end as it began—in twists, and traps, and tragedy.

My Thoughts:

Wow.  I've never read anything by Joe Abercrombie before, but that will soon change!  I was hooked after the first couple of chapters.  His writing is just incredible!  Ever have one of those books that it just irks you when you have to stop reading, even for a minute?  That was this book for me.

It's just so incredibly easy to relate to Yarvi.  He is a king, but has so many insecurities and so much doubt that you just sit there like, "Hey, I totally get this guy."

The secondary characters are equally wonderful.  Especially Sumael.  I absolutely loved everything about her.  This was a nice little nugget of her wisdom: "You can always make enemies of your friends.  Making friends of your enemies is harder labor." Preach. it. girl.

The world building and character building is also amazing.  It was so easy to imagine the surroundings in my mind.

Another nice thing about HaK: it was clean, for the most part.

This was just such an amazing fantasy book.  If you like fantasy, or are interested in starting to read fantasy: GET THIS BOOK.

I can't wait to read the next installment!

Sexual Content: mild (don't remember any, but just in case - it gets a "mild")

Dream a Little Dream by Kerstin Gier

Published: April 14, 2015
Publisher: Henry Holt & Co.
Pages: 336

Mysterious doors with lizard-head knobs. Talking stone statues. A crazy girl with a hatchet. Yes, Liv's dreams have been pretty weird lately. Especially the one where she's in a graveyard at night, watching four boys conduct dark magic rituals.

The strangest part is that Liv recognizes the boys in her dream. They're classmates from her new school in London, the school where she's starting over because her mom has moved them to a new country (again). But what's really scaring Liv is that the dream boys seem to know things about her in real life, things they couldn't possibly know--unless they actually are in her dreams? Luckily, Liv never could resist a good mystery, and all four of those boys are pretty cute....
My Thoughts:
Wow. Totally and completely LOVED this! I will go ahead and right off the bat say that Kerstin Gier's writing was better in this one (or maybe it was the translation that got better?) and this story was super fun and unique. I loved it, completely and utterly loved it.

Liv moves around A LOT and just when she thought life was finally going to give her what she wanted, her mother destroys that by getting a boyfriend. Soon Liv starts over at a new school with some crazy hot students that walk in a pact and have some crazy mystery behind them.

When Liv's mom and boyfriend announce that they want to merge family and move in together Liv's life and world changes forever. When Liv falls asleep she has the most insane and detail dream once she wakes up she is not the notice of these 4 good looking boys and their pack. Since then Liv continues to have these crazy dreams that are so real it starts to freak her out, especially when some of these guys say and do things that they couldn't have known about unless they saw her dreams. or.....

The mystery behind the boys and their pack is awesome. The idea of dream walking, although not new, in this story-unique. I loved the romance because it wasn't as cheesy as her first trilogy (Ruby Red) and yet it still had all the aspects I love in a romance.

The ending....whoa. TOTALLY did NOT see that coming. Everything, EVERYTHING about this book I just loved.

I don't want to say too much about it because I don't want to spoil it but I would totally recommend this book! YES!

Sexual Content: moderate (kissing and some talk of sex)
Language: mild
Violence: mild/moderate (attempted murder)

Dissonance by Erica O'Rourke

Published: July 22, 2014
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Pages: 496

Some decisions have unimaginable consequences.

Every time someone makes a choice, a new parallel world is spun off the existing one. Eating breakfast or skipping it, sneaking out instead of staying in bed—every decision creates an alternate universe in which an Echo self takes the road not travelled. As a Walker who can navigate between these realities, Del is training to help keep the dimensions in harmony.

When Del secretly starts to investigate other dissonant worlds, she get tangled up with an Echo of her longtime crush. She knows she shouldn't keep seeing him. But as Del persists, she uncovers a truth that the Council of Walkers is trying to hide—a secret that threatens the entire multiverse.
My Thoughts:
I have to say I didn't really know what I was getting into when I picked up this book, I thought to cover was super pretty and a friend of mine really liked it. Happen to find it on Bookoutlet for super cheap so I bought it, and it sat on my shelf for a few months before I finally got to picking it up! I am so glad I did and I'm looking forward to book 2!

First off I really enjoyed the concept of this book a genetic ability to manipulate matter and visit alternate worlds! How cool is that! I thought this was well written, well thought-out, the world building was perfect and easy to understand, the romance was not terrible and it's a contemporary with some sci-fi power to it. COOL!

Delancy is our main character and she helps monitor and fix anomalies that affect our world, or the "key world" in these alternate worlds. Delancy finds a musical frequency that connect worlds and is able to travel to them. Through threads she (and others like her called "walkers") and others are able to manipulate the threads to fix problems. However, you must be extremely careful otherwise you could "cleave" a world which is what happens to Delancy when she wasn't supposed to do anything in this alternate world. Which really brings about more problems then one might think.

I loved how in each alternate world the characters are all different due to A CHOICE that creates more and more alternate worlds. Because of a choice is spawns what life would have been like if a character had chosen differently. I really enjoyed that.

The romance wasn't amazing but wasn't terrible. That's all I'm going to say about it. No exciting "feels" but wasn't annoying either.

My favorite character however was Delancy's Grandpa, I loved their easy relationship, his quirk, and his story. I just loved everything about him that added that little extra humor in the story.

I also enjoyed the relationship between Delancy and her sister because I could relate on SO MANY LEVELS with this. I was great to watch their relationship change and develop throughout the book.

Overall I would recommend this book to those looking for a unique and fun book that captures your mind and imagination.

Crimson Bound by: Rosamund Hodge

Publication: May 5, 2015
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Pages: 448

When Rachelle was fifteen she was good—apprenticed to her aunt and in training to protect her village from dark magic. But she was also reckless— straying from the forest path in search of a way to free her world from the threat of eternal darkness. After an illicit meeting goes dreadfully wrong, Rachelle is forced to make a terrible choice that binds her to the very evil she had hoped to defeat.

Three years later, Rachelle has given her life to serving the realm, fighting deadly creatures in an effort to atone. When the king orders her to guard his son Armand—the man she hates most—Rachelle forces Armand to help her find the legendary sword that might save their world. As the two become unexpected allies, they uncover far-reaching conspiracies, hidden magic, and a love that may be their undoing. In a palace built on unbelievable wealth and dangerous secrets, can Rachelle discover the truth and stop the fall of endless night?

Inspired by the classic fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, Crimson Bound is an exhilarating tale of darkness, love, and redemption.

(This is a standalone novel, not part of the Cruel Beauty Universe.)
My Thoughts:
Can I just say that I LOVE Rosamund Hodge. She is now on my "must read" authors list.

Here we have another dark fairy tale retelling. Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf.
I was utterly impressed with the amount of imagination and creativity that went into this story.

The characters in the story weren't simple, or even black and white. They were all complex and there was a lot of gray in here.

Rachelle (Little Red) thinks she knows what she is doing. Over estimating herself and a man she meets in the forest she ends up making a deadly mistake, one that would not only cost her, her life but that of another-one whom she loved dearly.

To atone Rachelle throws herself into training and killing evil creatures that come out of the dark forest. The Dark forest is getting stronger and eventually it will take over the kingdom and the world.

Regardless of Rachelle and the fact that she has become part of the forest and bound to an evil king that is trying to return, she fights herself constantly and the evil that is trying to overtake her.

I really liked Rachelle and her constant battle, however I am sad of some of her mistakes. It irritated me that she lasted so long and held out so long but ended up making some pretty stupid choices.

The romance was good and I really REALLY liked Armond and his story, I loved the mystery behind a lot of these characters and the twist Hodge took in regards to a few of the main characters.

Overall this is a very dark retelling and if you enjoy battling evil and fantasy then give this a go.

Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley (Coming April 28, 2015)

Neil Gaiman’s Stardust meets John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars in this fantasy about a girl caught between two worlds…two races…and two destinies.

Aza Ray is drowning in thin air.

Since she was a baby, Aza has suffered from a mysterious lung disease that makes it ever harder for her to breathe, to speak—to live.

So when Aza catches a glimpse of a ship in the sky, her family chalks it up to a cruel side effect of her medication. But Aza doesn’t think this is a hallucination. She can hear someone on the ship calling her name.

Only her best friend, Jason, listens. Jason, who’s always been there. Jason, for whom she might have more-than-friendly feelings. But before Aza can consider that thrilling idea, something goes terribly wrong. Aza is lost to our world—and found, by another. Magonia.

Above the clouds, in a land of trading ships, Aza is not the weak and dying thing she was. In Magonia, she can breathe for the first time. Better, she has immense power—and as she navigates her new life, she discovers that war is coming. Magonia and Earth are on the cusp of a reckoning. And in Aza’s hands lies the fate of the whole of humanity—including the boy who loves her. Where do her loyalties lie?

My Thoughts: No spoilers because I REALLY want you to read it!

Same, Emma Stone.  Same.

I picked this book, solely because of the feather on the cover (don't judge me).  Yes. I like feathers.  Some might even go so far as to say I “love” feathers.  I think they are beautiful and amazing.  But I digress…

I have never, ever read a book like this one.  This story was just so completely original that, despite my initial disdain for Aza (which lessened as the book progressed - I loved her in the end) I was entranced after a few chapters.  As for her name? Aza Ray = beautiful.  Even if she was referred to only as Aza, I called her Aza Ray in my head through the whole book.

Aza is dying of a disease that is so rare it bears her name – although she prefers to call the disease Clive.  Her parents and sister practically live their lives on pins and needles because the smallest thing can set off an episode that will send her to the hospital.

In the book, it all starts when she sees a very real ship floating in the sky and no one believes her.  They all think it is a hallucination brought on by her medication(s).  She starts to hear her name in the wind, so to speak.  Someone or something is calling to her.  Things continue to get worse until finally, in a horrific, can’t-stop-reading episode - Aza dies.

She wakes up in Magonia (which, by the way, is a place that she and her bff/love interest Jason had discussed (but dismissed) shortly before her death, because he is the only one who will listen to her).  She is a brand new person with strong lungs and a strong body.  And: she’s blue.  *The creatures that inhabit Magonia are simply amazing.  When you read it (which you should) you will understand.*  She is reunited with her mother, from whom Aza was stolen when she wasn't even hatched. (Yes. Hatched.)

Chaos, danger, and high fantasy adventures ensue as Aza tries to discover who she is and where she belongs in her new-found life.  Where are her loyalties?  Who can she trust?  YOU HAVE TO READ IT.

I believe this will be a “love it or hate it” book, whenever it finally catches on.  I sincerely hope it does, because this book deserves so much attention!  I’m totally fangirling over Headley’s writing and I will be finding other works of hers to devour asap.

PS - HarperCollins picked up Magonia & "a sequel", so I can't wait to see where this goes!!!!!

Rook by Sharon Cameron + GIVEAWAY

Publication: April 28, 2015
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Pages: 464

History has a way of repeating itself. In the Sunken City that was once Paris, all who oppose the new revolution are being put to the blade. Except for those who disappear from their prison cells, a red-tipped rook feather left in their place. Is the mysterious Red Rook a savior of the innocent or a criminal?

Meanwhile, across the sea in the Commonwealth, Sophia Bellamy’s arranged marriage to the wealthy René Hasard is the last chance to save her family from ruin. But when the search for the Red Rook comes straight to her doorstep, Sophia discovers that her fiancé is not all he seems. Which is only fair, because neither is she.

As the Red Rook grows bolder and the stakes grow higher, Sophia and René find themselves locked in a tantalizing game of cat and mouse.
My Thoughts:
Can I just go ahead and just rant and rave about how awesome this book was?! Well, it was amazing! I couldn't put it down! I was so impressed with how Sharon Cameron redid her own version of The Scarlet Pimpernel (which is a favorite of mine book and the 1982 Jane Seymoure movie adaptation). It was BRILLIANT, she took apart characters and created different/new characters with individual aspects that were in specific characters from the original telling.

I enjoyed how this story takes place MANY years from now where the world went through a technology-earth destruction that killed many people as they relied so much on technology that they didnt know how to survive without it. So technology has been outlawed and those that fund, use, or any way get access to technology are put to death. This society has decided to revert back to the 17th century style of living. With big hair, lots of makeup and ridiculous outfits.

We have Sophia who is our main character and she is a completely fun, I had a blast reading her adventures and character development. She's normal too, with all the feelings and emotions  of any normal girl. Yet with a bit more adventure than the average girl she is just cool.

I completely enjoyed the brother/sister relationship between Sophia and her brother Tom. I loved reading their interactions and what they were willing to do for each other.

The action was crazy and had me biting my nails and sitting at the edge of my seat holding the book 2 inches from my face because I had to know what was going to happen next.

LeBlanc our villain was INSANE, literally INSANE, his logic, way of thinking the world should be and the sickness in his own mind was fascinating! I was creeped out and disgusted by him which made him completely fun to read about. Creepy creepy man....

I was floored with the twist and turns of this story. I kept second guessing myself with pointing the fingers to every character who I thought was the "bad guy" and when all was reveled...whoa. didn't see it coming.

I actually didn't mind the romance in this. There is a bit of a love triangle that wasn't bad to read at all! Plus the romance didn't overwhelm the story. It was a nice undertone which kept you interesting which I prefer!

Overall the author did a GREAT job of writing her own version of this story and I thought she was brilliant!

Frostfire by Amanda Hocking

Publication: January 6, 2015
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Pages: 321

Bryn Aven is an outcast among the Kanin, the most powerful of the troll tribes.

Set apart by her heritage and her past, Bryn is a tracker who's determined to become a respected part of her world. She has just one goal: become a member of the elite King’s Guard to protect the royal family. She's not going to let anything stand in her way, not even a forbidden romance with her boss Ridley Dresden.

But all her plans for the future are put on hold when Konstantin– a fallen hero she once loved – begins kidnapping changelings. Bryn is sent in to help stop him, but will she lose her heart in the process?
My Thoughts

I really enjoyed the first book of Amanda Hockings Trylle trilogy that I really should finish.  So being stuck in an airport I saw this book and decided to try it out. I LOVED IT!

I really liked seeing the world from the Trylle trilogy expanded. We get more insight on the other groups, not just the Kanin tribe. We get a complete backstory and history of this group and it was brilliantly done! Something new and creative. Plus you get to see some characters from the original Trylle trilogy peak in. Bryn an outcast in the tribe due to the fact that she is only half Kanin. She is a tracker but her her biggest desire is to become part of the King's Guard and does everything she can to prove herself to everyone that she is Kanin and that she is part of them and what she deserves to be part of the King's Guard. However, when young changelings who are about to be taken back to their Kanin families, keep getting kidnapped, things take a turn for the worse. Then Bryn finds out that the man kidnapping them once tried to kill Bryn's father and was once Bryn's idol.

Bryn bothered me... a lot. She is a great strong female character. We get to see all sorts of wonderful sides of Bryn as she is placed in different scenarios. She is strong, smart, and you get to see her make mistakes and she that she is "human." Relatable too, she even fights and argues with her parents even though she loves them to no end! However I wanted to slap her most of the time and thought she was being silly or ridiculous  Quit fighting with your parents over stupid things, quit being silly in the romance department. GAH.

I enjoyed the romance but found it to be no surprise. It was typical. It did exactly overwhelm the story but still a pretty good part of it which I liked. There looks to be a bit of a love triangle but not 100% sure which I hope there is not, I wouldn't mind seeing it dragged out a bit either.

Overall this is a great start to this new spin off series and I definitely look forward to the next book. It also makes we want to go back and stinkin finish the Trylle series, even though I know what's going to happen!
