My Thoughts:
I really liked this but I just wasn't as amazed by it as the first book. I loved all the same things as the first book so if you want to know what all I loved, go here. Because right now I'm gonna delve into what bothered me.
There was a lot of waiting around. Or maybe not so much waiting around because Kami isn't the type of character to do that but there was a lot of stalled activity. Lillian didn't want the kids to help so she refused the let them try so they made their own plans, right? But the plans never seemed to go anywhere. And the entire book builds up to the climactic fight scene. But it felt really anticlimactic after all that buildup. I felt like we all knew exactly what was going to happen.
But I still love the characters and I wanted to know what happened to them, though, so that was good. Ash: He's always trying to do what's right and I felt so bad for him. I want something great to happen for Ash in the end. Angela is still my favorite. She's so funny. And I love that she wasn't the stereotypical, YA version of a lesbian. She was normal and believable and I actually really appreciate the way her story is playing out so far. Holly annoys me just a bit but I completely understand her. I might be a bit in love with Rusty. He's hilarious and fun and loyal and I'm glad he got more of a part in this book than the first.
And then there's Kami and Jared. Just gaaaaah! I felt like this entire book existed to create emotional relationship drama. It was entirely clear to everyone but Kami and Jared, apparently, that they're completely into each other. But most of the book was the stupid back-and-forth, "I don't know if s/he likes me" crap. I don't completely understand Jared. I know there are masochistic people out there but I just don't understand them in general. So now that Jared is outside of Kami's head I don't really get him at all. Kami's reactions to him made sense but most of the their relationship in this book bothers me. They do have a couple of good scenes (Yum!) but I was mostly irritated and saddened by them.
Another thing that bothered me was all the switching perspectives. This book was shown from the perspectives of a lot of different characters rather than just Kami's and sometimes Jared's, like the first book. I got a bit confused by whose head we were in.
And the final thing that bothered me was that it wasn't as squeaky clean as the first one. There were a few more curse words and some heavier scenes. It still wasn't so bad but just not as clean. Just a bit disappointing.
Ok, so other than all that stuff I just railed on, I really liked this book. I can't wait to read the third. I can't wait to find out what happened and I will definitely read more by Sarah Rees Brennan.
