My Thoughts:
This whole situation and story is complicated and I really enjoy that. This book is not a quick read, it has everything I want in YA fantasy. Great world-building, awesome plot, lovely writing, action, magic, interesting characters, a particularly feisty heroine, twists and turns, murder, political intrigue, romance, revenge, and just lots and lots to this whole story. I think Sarah J Maas' writing style is suited perfectly to fantasy. Everything is described in sumptuous detail which keeps the reader wanting more and not being able to put the book down. The world-building itself is just impressive and fantastic. No one can deny that Sarah J Maas has a particularly rich imagination.
In this 2nd book the we continue to follow Celaena. I like Celaena because she is strong, fierce and completely kicks butt, but she still manages to show her softer, more feminine characteristics throughout the book, and if I may add a little VAIN but hey aren't we all...just a little? In Crown of Midnight we get to find out a whole heck of a lot more about her background and where she comes from. I truly enjoyed these aspects of the book as it gave Calaena more depth and also made her more interesting at the same time. There has been so much mystery surrounding her up until this point so it was nice to have some things explained. WHEW! Thank you Maas for that. So by the end you are excited that you paid attention to how she held this, or her reaction to that. When Celaena has this major part of her past revealed, it's revealed in a way that feels organic and not at all forced, which I liked a lot.
There is a bit of a love triangle in the first book and continues on in the second but not enough of a love triangle to make one gag themselves. The romance was there which was needed to carry out the plot but I felt the triangle was not. Now, like I said it's just a subtleness there of a triangle but not enough to overwhelm the reader.
If you love fantasy (that is not overly crazy) and none stop mystery and intrigue than this series is for you.
