Book Description:
Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.
Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.
So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.
My Thoughts:
Wow that was crazy fun and COOL! 4 Kingdoms Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. All have their own culture, race, skin, everything! This story is a sweeping, action-packed read full of romance, secrets, plot twists, beautifully described scenery, political intrigue, this book was just absolutely brilliant! And I enjoyed every minute of it.
The story follows the kingdom of Winter. Nearly broken and destroyed by another kingdom. A group of people pledge their lives to bringing back what once was Winter.
Meira, our awesome female protagonist, is strong, fierce, determined, loyal, and will do anything to get her nearly broken kingdom back. Her character was fantastic. She was not to be underestimated and I loved everything about her.
Mather is another very interesting character because he is the royal prince and Meira and him have a very close friendship. One where they would be willing to do almost anything for the other. Mather is devoted to his kingdom and willing to sacrifice everything for it. He is kind and good. Even while the strain and pressure of all the expectations of him he is willing to do whatever it takes for his kingdom. There is a possible love thing going on between Mather and Meira but BOTH know that it is impossible because of rank, duty, time, and with everything they've worked for it would be impossible.
Later on in the story this is a possible love triangle that was actually well handled. The romance wasn't the main point of the story. It was the struggles of the kingdom of Winter, throughout the whole book that maintains the main storyline which is nice. However the author does a great job of making the reader not know to whom to lean toward. They are both wonderful characters and you can't help but cheer them both on and wonder who will end up with whom!
The other love interest is Theron, who is just as clever, sweet and completely lovable. Through out his part in the story he proves himself on several occasions that he has the making of a great and good leader. I'm am very invested and intrigued with his character and am excited to see where the author will take him.
This book has everything someone would want in a good adventurous story. That will keep readers wanting more.
