Lark Rising by Sandra Waugh

Publication Date: September 23, 2014
Book Description:
Lark has foreseen two things—she will fall for a young man with sage green eyes, and he will kill her.

Sixteen-year-old Lark Carew is happiest close to home, tending her garden and gathering herbs for medicines. But when her Sight warns her that monsters called Troths will soon invade her village, Lark is summoned on a journey to seek help from the legendary Riders of Tarnec. Little does she suspect that one of the Riders, Gharain, is the very man who has haunted her visions. Or that the people of Tarnec have called her there for another reason: Lark is the Guardian of Life, the first of four Guardians who must awaken their powers to recover four stolen amulets. Together, the amulets—Life, Death, Dark, and Light—keep the world in Balance. To take back the Life amulet, Lark will have to discover her true inner strength and give in to a love that she swears will be her downfall.
My Thoughts:
I've said this a few times before, for anyone who follows me on YouTube. Juliet Marillier fans will LOVE this book. And I happen to be a Juliet Marrillier fan so I LOVED this book!

This is the story about a girl named Lark, who wanted nothing more than to stay with her twin sister and grandmother for the rest of her life in peaceful harmony and tend to her garden. Well of course that isn't to be, for Lark has "the Sight" which means she sees visions of what is to come. When she one days sees the destruction of her village she tells her grandmother who then tells the leaders of the village. When Lark is chosen to call for help from "the Riders" Lark sets out on a journey that will test her in ways she never thought possible. I enjoyed Lark's character as we watched her grow, mature, struggle and change due to the quest she was chosen to take. She learns that she is one of four Guardians to help keep balance to the world. When the four amulets that help Guardians keep and hold balance are stolen Lark, as her Guardian right, is to set off on a journey to find her amulet.

Along the way she meets up with a guy named Gharain, a guy whom Lark has seen in her dreams. In Lark's visions she sees Gharain as the person who will kill her yet he is the very man who has stolen her heart. Gharain is a wonderful guy who due to past mistakes tries to control his passions and feelings toward Lark. The romance part of this story was a bit of a disappointment for me simply because there wasn't a whole lot of development between Gharain's change in feelings toward Lark. It changed too quickly for me and lost a bit of that extra "umph" in that department. Nonetheless I still enjoyed his character and the romance. Regardless of the fact that even Lark made me roll my eyes at her because of her silly ways.

Overall the adventure was perfect, the fantasy and action was exciting and I loved the descriptions of the world that Sandra Waugh created. I felt that her world building was unique and wonderful and I enjoyed visioning everything in my mind.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Truly LOVED it!

A HUGE thank you to Random House and Sandra Waugh for the book, which I got in exchange for an honest review.*

Meet the Author
Sandra grew up in an old house full of crowded bookshelves, in walking distance of an old library that allowed her to drag home a sack of six books at a time. It goes without saying, then, that she fell in love with the old house in Litchfield County, CT, because of its many bookshelves, and she lives there now with her husband, two sons, and a dog who snores. Loudly.
