Book Review: Splintered by A.G. Howard ~ A DARK & TWISTED TALE OF ALICE IN WONDERLAND ~

Book Description:
This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

My Thoughts:
Wow! I really enjoyed this take of the Alice in Wonderland tale. This is dark, twisted and perfect for Lewis Carroll's book. I wonder what he would think of this. This author did an amazing job on bringing a fairy tale to life. Creepy and so very easy pictured in your mind. It flows and keeps the reader sucked into this twisted tale.

This is a story of Alice's decedents, women who have blond hair and eyes but who are all cursed. They start to see things and hear things that end them up in a mental institution. Alyssa is a descendant of the original Alice Liddell, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland book. Alyssa's mother tries to kill Alyssa when she was a small child and ends up in a mental institution. Alyssa knows she is also doomed to the same fate because she is already hearing voices from insects and plant life.

Alyssa does all she can to not be her mother. She wears as much make up as she can, she adds things to her hair to help hide the gorgeous blond-ness of it and dresses "skater-girl" the picture I had in my mind for this character was a lot like Avril Lavigne. Beautiful but in this story, hids behind the hair, makeup and clothes.

Alyssa has been thinking of a way to find out about this curse and how to end it, as she refuses to end up like her mother. After she has a melt down she decides to follow the voice she has known all her life and enters the twists world of Wonderland that had some problems after the first Alice went down the rabbit hole. Alyssa must follow the clues in order to figure out what happened and why the women in her family are cursed to suffer the same fate of madness.

I had a blast reading this story I loved the dark and twisted tale of Alice and now and even darker take on the story and a continuation of the story of what happened AFTER the first Alice went down the rabbit hole.

I was a little disappointed in the romance aspect. It started off great and as the story progressed the romance continued with that "almost factor," where the reader is like "gah! so close" but when certain things happened I was a little bummed and the story lost some of it's mystery in THAT aspect.

Sexual Content: moderate (PG- with some kissing)
Language: Moderate (I honestly can't remember)
Drugs/Alcohol: mild
Violence: moderate (with some graphic descriptions of twisted and gory fairy tale creatures)
