Book Review: Written in Red By Anne Bishop
Book Description:
As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others.
Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.
My Thoughts:
Such a fabulous well written world and story! WOW! Loved it!
There is so much to say, where to begin!
Ok, what an amazing, slow, well built, well written, paranormal world, story! A paranormal story unlike anything we have seen before. Set in a world run by The Others a group of non humans, such as shapeshifters, monsters, elementals, and vampires. This story follows the Lakeside Courtyard where they call humans monkeys and see them as little more than meat, humans learn to live in the lands allowed to them by the Others, who control everything, not mention put the fear in the hearts of humans, who do not follow the rules because when rules/laws are broken they get eaten.
I absolutely adored our main character Meg the cassandra sangue, or blood prophet. She is the shining innocence and softness to the harsh reality of this world Anne Bishop creates. She is childlike, innocent, yet strong that draws the rest of them to her despite their desire to eat her, because to the Others she is human but doesn't "smell" human. Well because she is not but for a long time they don't know that, and that is one reason they are all drawn to her. Her strength endears her to them and form eventually they form a fierce protectiveness of her that was really cute and sweet.
Simon Wolfgard, one of our heros, is one of the Others. A shapeshifter wolf, who rules his territory with sharp claws and teeth. Meg’s smell and secrets invoke his protective nature, and desires to know her against his better judgment or animal instincts, he hires her as a human liaison for his people, and ends up eventually falling for her but he doesn't realize it and the author does a fantastic job of the "romance" side part of the story but not the MAIN story. It's slow and no way NEAR to even coming together it holds you on for more and I loved it.
There is just too much of this story to even review on, but I hope that I got you interested enough to check it out, because it was fabulous! I should give it more stars!
